The FFH area Westlicher Taubergrund is a protected area (protected area identifier DE-6523-341) in the Main-Tauber district and in the Hohenlohe district in Baden that was registered in 2005 by the Stuttgart regional council in accordance with Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive) -Wuerttemberg . The FFH area is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas . With the ordinance of the regional council of Stuttgart on the definition of areas of community importance of October 30, 2018, the protected area was established.

The FFH area includes the Taubertal near Bad Mergentheim and the side valleys with partially natural flowing waters and richly structured dry slopes, limestone grasslands with an outstanding inventory of species, large-scale, species-rich beech and oak-hornbeam forests on the edge .

Protection purpose

The following habitat types according to Annex I of the Habitats Directive occur in the area:

  • Limestone (semi) dry lawns and their stages of shrubbery (* orchid-rich stands)
  • Moist tall herbaceous vegetation
  • Lean, lowland hay meadows
  • Limestone cliffs with crevice vegetation
  • Mixed ravine and hillside forests
  • Alder, ash and softwood alluvial forests
  • Bedstraw-oak-hornbeam forests
  • Star chickweed oak hornbeam forests
  • Grove beech forests
  • Woodruff beech forests
  • Orchid-lime-beech forests
  • Juniper stands on dwarf shrub heaths or limestone lawns
  • Base-rich or lime pioneer lawn
  • Running waters with flooding aquatic vegetation
