history

Wetzleben was first mentioned in 994 as "Vuidislevu". The oldest building in the village is the St. Godehardi church, named after Bishop Godehard von Hildesheim (960-1038). He is said to have consecrated the church. One of the oldest bells in the Braunschweig region hangs in the church tower, dating from 1395. With around 120 inhabitants, Wetzleben is one of the smallest villages in the Braunschweig region. On March 1, 1974, the previously independent municipality of Wetzleben was merged with the neighboring municipality of Hedeper to form the municipality of Hedeper .

coat of arms

The coat of arms in red on gold (yellow) forms a nested, i.e. a stone cross grooved by the stonemason, as found on the east gable of the Wetzleber St. Godehardi Church. The four red linden leaves are reminiscent of the family of Sambleben , whose "Junkerdorf" Wetzleben was from 1438 to 1587. At the same time, the leaves can be related to the linden tree that grows in front of the church. On the one hand, the colors are reminiscent of the colors of the Hildesheim Monastery , which originally owned the building. At the same time, red and yellow (gold) are the colors of the ducal Brunswick family coat of arms (two yellow lions on a red background).
