The whetstone near Hatzbach in the Hessian district of Marburg-Biedenkopf and Schwalm-Eder district is 358.5  m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Gilserberger heights .

Mountain name

The name whetstone indicates a pre-Christian place of worship . The Teutons performed their services in sacred groves , on special trees, at springs, striking rocks and on mountains. The sharpened stone dust from stones consecrated to the god Wodan , so-called whetstones , was considered sacred. Such stone dust was probably hewn on the mountain.

The whetstone is located on the southern edge of the Gilserberger Heights . Its peak rises about 150 m west-southwest of the border between the Marburg-Biedenkopf district and the Schwalm-Eder district, 2 km north-north-east of Hatzbach (to Stadtallendorf ), 3 km south-east of Josbach ( Rauschenberg ) and 2.7 km (as the crow flies ) to the east from Wolferode (Stadtallendorf). The Wohra tributary Josbach flows a little to the north past the wooded mountain and the small Hatzbach tributary Wildenbach rises to the south .

The whetstone is one in the natural environment feature unit group West Hesse Highlands (no. 34) and in the main unit Oberhessische threshold (346) for subunit Gilserberger heights (346.0) with its landscape to the south in the sub unit Neustadt saddle drops (346.1).

Traffic and walking

The federal highway 3 leads northwest past the Wetzstein in the Josbach area . From this, the district road  44 branches off to Wolferode in the village . This meets the state road  3071 leading to Hatzbach. For example, starting at these roads, the mountain can be hiked on mostly forest paths and paths, and the 12 km long hiking trail around the Wetzstein leads around the mountain .
