Linden (also Wheatsheaf ) is a city in Union County , New Jersey , United States . In the census of 2000 had a total population of 39,394 has been registered. Linden was formed in 1861 from parts of Elizabeth , Rahway and Union Township .

As of the 2000 census, there are 39,394 people, 15,052 households and 10,084 families in the city. The population density is 1,407.0 inhabitants per km². 66.08% of the population is White, 22.80% African American , 0.14% Native American , 2.35% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 4.88% Other Ethnicity, and 3.71% Mixed Race . 14.40% are Latinos of various origins.
Of the 15,052 households, 29.0% have children under the age of 18. 46.7% of them are married couples living together, 15.3% are single mothers, 33.0% are not families, 27.9% are single households and 13.6% are people over 65. The average household size is 2 , 60, the average family size 3.21.
22.5% of the population are under 18 years old, 8.2% between 18 and 24, 30.4% between 25 and 44, 22.7% between 45 and 64, 16.3% older than 65. The average age is 38 years. The ratio of women to men is 100: 90.4, for people older than 18 the ratio is 100: 85.2.

economy
Linden is located on the navigable Arthur Kill and is a petrochemical site ( Bayway refinery by Phillips 66 ). From 1917 to around 1990 there was also an important American Cyanamid plant in Linden.
