Wiebke Steffen

Wiebke Steffen (born May 26, 1946 in Delmenhorst ; † July 22, 2017 ) was a German criminologist .

Life

Wiebke Steffen is a granddaughter of the Delmenhorst SPD politician and Lord Mayor Wilhelm von der Heyde . She attended the Max Planck High School and studied sociology , political science, and economic and social history at the universities of Hamburg and Freiburg from 1965 to 1973 . In 1970 she graduated with a Magister Artium , followed by a doctorate in 1976 .

From 1970 to 1973 she worked in the “Social Work” research department at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Freiburg. From 1973 to 1978 research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law , Criminology Research Group, with a focus on instance research (police and public prosecutor's office).

In 1978 Wiebke Steffen moved to the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office in Munich . There she built up the criminological research group of the Bavarian Police, which she also headed until 2002. From 1994 until the end of her active service at the end of 2006, she was the head of the “Research, Statistics, Prevention” department.

Act

Wiebke Steffen's work and research focus was on political and practical advice, in particular through the preparation of criminological and social science reports. This is especially true in the areas of: Young people as victims and perpetrators of crime, migration and crime, violence in the immediate vicinity, crime prevention, goal setting and success measurement in police crime control, evaluation, meaningfulness and information limits of crime statistics.

Steffen was a member of the violence commission of the federal government from 1988 to 1990, from 1997 to 2006 chairwoman of the commission for police crime prevention of the federal states and the federal government (KPK) and in this function also a member of the project management for police crime prevention of the federal states and the federal government (PLPK). In 2006 and 2007 she prepared several expert reports for the European Economic and Social Committee.

Wiebke Steffen was a volunteer at WEISSEN RING eV for many years . Since October 2010 she has been the chairwoman of the Advisory Council on Prevention and a member of the Federal Executive Board. In addition, Steffen has been a member of the congress management and program advisory board of the DPT - Deutscher Präventionstag gGmbH since 1997, with the responsibility for "scientific advice and preparation of expert reports". Since 2007 she has been preparing the scientific reports for the respective key topics of the annual German Prevention Days. She also took part in the conferences of the European Crime Prevention Network for the German Prevention Day and represented it on the jury for the award of the “XY Prize - Together against Crime” for moral courage.

As a “pioneer in crime prevention”, Wiebke Steffen was awarded the “Nick Knatterton Cap of Honor” by the Schleswig-Holstein State Association of the Federal German Detectives in February 2010. In November 2013, Wiebke Steffen was one of the six personalities who were awarded the Bavarian State Medal for Internal Security for the first time . With this, the Free State is honoring exceptional services to internal security in Bavaria.
