Wieden was until 1850 an independent municipality and is now a district of Vienna in the same 4th district of Vienna Wieden .

history

The first written mention of Wiedens took place around 1211 as Widem in connection with the establishment of the Heiligengeistspital. The name comes from Widum ("dedicated property"), the equipment of a church . The original Wieden settlement emerged towards the end of the 12th century. It stretched along the Wien River to today's Karlsplatz . The densely populated suburb of Vienna was burned down during the Turkish siege in 1529 and 1683 . The main expansion of the Wiedens took place in the 18th century. Numerous aristocratic palaces were built. In 1850 the place Wieden finally became the eponymous district of the new 4th district of Vienna.

The speaking coat of arms of Wiedens shows a willow tree , which is based on a misinterpretation of the name Wieden.

Surname

Wieden is derived from the Widum (immobile assets of the parish plots) from Sankt Stephan . In fact, from 1137 to 1723, Wieden was largely owned by the cathedral monastery of St. Stephan.

Similar-sounding derivatives in the West Slavic languages denote the entire city of Vienna:
