Viktor Mykolaiowytsch Schokin (born November 4, 1952 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian lawyer and politician.
Life
Viktor Schokin graduated from high school in Kiev in 1970 and then attended the Ukrainian Agricultural Academy until 1972.
From 1972 to 1973 he worked as a technician at the Central Republican Botanical Garden of the USSR in Kiev and then completed his military service in the Red Army until 1975 . Between 1975 and 1976 he was employed again as a technician. From 1976 to 1980 he studied law in Kharkiv at the Kharkov Law Institute named after Felix Dzerzhinsky .
Between 1980 and 1989 was Schokin, most recently as a senior prosecutor at the Prosecutor of Rajon Moscow (now part of Stadtrajons Pechersk and Holossijiw ) in Kiev.
Between 1989 and 1994, Schokin was employed by the Kiev Public Prosecutor's Office as the chief prosecutor and examiner in particularly important investigations. From 1994 to 1998 he headed various supervisory agencies such as the “Oversight of Compliance with Laws of Special Forces Fighting Organized Crime” and the “Tax Inspectorate”, and between 1998 and 2001 he was the Public Prosecutor for particularly important economic investigations and the Public Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine.
From 2002 to 2003, from 2004 to 2007 and again since 2014, Schokin was Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine and on February 10, 2015, succeeded Vitaly Yarema as Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
On February 16, 2015, Schokin became a member of the National Security Council of Ukraine .
In September 2015, the American Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey R. Pyatt described the Ukrainian Prosecutor General as unwilling to reform and unable to fight internal corruption. On February 16, 2016, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko , in addition to the resignation of Prime Minister Yatsenjuk , also called on Schokin to resign.
At first it was unclear whether Schokin was only on leave and still in office.
After Schokin did not accept an invitation from Parliamentary President Volodymyr Hroysman to a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada on March 17, 2016, at which the approval for the dismissal of the Prosecutor General was to be negotiated, the Parliament decided on March 29 to dismiss the Prosecutor General for the Check March 30th. Shokin was dismissed from the post of Attorney General on April 3, 2016 by a decree of the President of Ukraine. His successor was initially (provisional) Jurij Sevruk , then Jurij Lutsenko .
Joe Biden , then Vice President of the United States, claims that Schokin's dismissal came under pressure from the United States.
