The Wildsee between Bad Wildbad and Gernsbach is a bog colk in the northern Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg . It is considered to be the largest raised bog in Germany. The surrounding plateau high moor , the Wildseemoor , is the largest high moor in the Black Forest and is part of the Kaltenbronn nature and forest reserve .

The Wildsee is located at an altitude of 909 m above sea level. NN on a plateau between Bad Wildbad, Gernsbach and Forbach . Since the work of Karl Müller from the first half of the 20th century, the area of the lake is given as 2.3 hectares . This measure also includes the bodies of water covered with vibrating turf. More recent data from the State Institute for the Environment, Measurements and Nature Conservation Baden-Württemberg on the open water area is approx. 1.15 ha . Immediately adjacent is the smaller Hornsee (0.43 ha). The closest settlement with a road connection is Kaltenbronn about two kilometers southwest. The border between the communities of Gernsbach ( Rastatt district ) and Bad Wildbad ( Calw district ) runs through the Wildsee and the associated nature reserve. The Hornsee lies on the Gernsbacher district.
Emergence
At the end of the last ice age (around 10,000 years ago), layers of red sandstone impermeable to water caused swamping when there was heavy rainfall. Incomplete decomposition resulted in a layer of peat up to eight meters deep in the Wildseemoor. The higher the peat layer, the lower the nutrient supply for the plants growing on this layer. The result is vegetation of relatively undemanding plants (shrubs, mosses, cotton grasses).
natural reserve
The moorland with Wildsee and Hornsee is under nature protection as a near-natural high moor with moor forests (Wildseemoor nature reserve; 183.2 ha ) in order to ensure the unaffected development of the raised moor, bog edge pine and bog edge spruce forest ecosystems with their special animal and plant species. In addition, the region around the lake is designated as a protected forest (Bannwald Wildseemoor, 291 ha ). With the Hohlohsee nature reserve and the surrounding forest reserves , the Wildseemoor has been combined into the Kaltenbronn nature and forest reserve (1750 ha) since 2000 .
tourism
The moor landscape is criss-crossed by a boardwalk created by the Black Forest Association , which passes the lake directly. The signs for the hiking trail ( Mittelweg Pforzheim - Waldshut ) now lead around the nature reserve.
