Wilfried Sauermann

Wilfried Sauermann (born July 7, 1939 in Frankfurt am Main - Römerstadt ; † February 19, 2013 ) was a German chess player . Together with Anicetas Uogelė he won the 14th European Championship in correspondence chess .

Sauermann learned to play chess at the age of 11. In 1956 he became a club player. As a result, he won the Stuttgart city championship in 1964 and the Württemberg Cup tournament in 1965. In 1966 and 1971 he finished second in the championship of Württemberg. With the 1st team of the Schachfreunde Stuttgart he took part in the finals of the German team championship in 1967 , played in the German Chess League in the mid-1970s and in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1980s.

Correspondence chess

Sauermann played correspondence chess since 1956. In the 3rd German Cup tournament he finished 2. In the final of the 5th Correspondence Chess Olympiad, he fought for Germany. With 2 victories in European tournaments he qualified for the 14th European Championship. Here he reached first place together with Anicetas Uogelė in 1981. Since both had the same fine rating, they were jointly declared European champions.

Further stations were participation in the finals of the 17th German championship in 1981, invitation to the Kurt Klar memorial tournament in 1982, qualification for the final of the 3rd World Cup tournament in 1986, semifinals of the 17th World Cup in 1990, 5th place at the 50th European Championship in 1994 / 98, won the 3rd European team championship in 1995 with the West German team and the 1st team Bundesliga from 1997.

Sauermann was named International Master in 1990 and Honored International Master in 2001 by the International Correspondence Chess Federation .
