The Wilhelm Knapp School is a school in Weilburg . It is named after Wilhelm Knapp, who was hired as headmaster in 1921. Originally opened as an evening school , the Wilhelm Knapp School has continued to develop and has existed in its current form since the 1950s. The number of students has almost doubled since the 1990s. The introduction of the Fachschule für Wirtschaft has brought about a change in the formerly purely vocational school, which is particularly reflected in the number of students. In October 2006, around 700 full-time students and around 600 part-time students attended the educational facility, which is taught by 72 teachers.

history

On April 26, 1846, the trade association for the Duchy of Nassau announced the establishment of a Sunday and evening school and the establishment of a reading cabinet for commercial purposes. At first, elementary teachers gave the lessons, lectures and meetings rounded them off. In 1866 the range of lessons was expanded and there were now the following new subjects: drawing, arithmetic and bookkeeping, geometry, German and calligraphy as well as housekeeping lessons for girls. The first full-time teachers were hired in 1917, but lessons could no longer be held in the previously used premises of the elementary school and were moved to emergency shelters.

In 1921, after completing his studies as a trade teacher at the Vocational Education Institute in Berlin, Wilhelm Knapp was hired as headmaster; he later gave the school its current name. In 1922 the school authorities were transferred to the Oberlahnkreis , which anchored compulsory vocational schooling in a statute. In the years 1933–1945 the range of courses was expanded to include citizenship education . Most of the male teachers were drafted into military service, so lessons were given by the female teachers at that time.

From 1944 to 1945 the classrooms were mainly used by the National Socialist regime, later as a people's kitchen. School lessons officially started again in 1947 with an oversized increase in new registrations due to the high number of war returnees. Due to the great demand, a two-year commercial school was opened and Wilhelm Knapp resumed planning for a new school building. 1951 Ferdinand Breithecker became the new rector.

overall view

In 1952, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on today's school premises in Frankfurter Straße in Weilburg for the first construction phase, from which the premises for the business school resulted. The second construction phase followed five years later, which then also covered the space required for the commercial schools. Willibald Nowak replaced his predecessor as headmaster in 1967; since then the school has officially been named Wilhelm Knapp School . In 1970 modern workshops were added and four years later another building, in which, among other things, scientific rooms were located. Nowak's successor and then principal of the school, Lothar Nahm, who inaugurated the last new building in 1975, supervised these construction measures.

Ottmar Seibold has been the headmaster since 1990.

Focus on franchising

With the nationwide first and to date only franchise manager training course, the department provides franchise-specific knowledge and an understanding of the interrelationships in a franchise company in a two-year full-time course. The Wilhelm Knapp School receives support from the German Franchise Association. V. (DFV) as well as franchise companies and experts. The prerequisites for participating in the training are at least an intermediate level and several years of professional experience in a commercial profession. For students or dropouts with relevant professional experience, the focus is also an entry into the franchise industry. The supplement to the Financial Times Deutschland dated November 14, 2006, as well as articles on the technical college for franchising at the Wilhelm-Knapp-Schule Weilburg published in the FAZ on June 13, 2006.

Vocational high school

The vocational grammar school is the upper level of the vocational school system. Admission to the vocational high school requires a qualified intermediate level of education. It comprises grades 11, 12 and 13. In addition to general education (German, English, social studies, history, ethics or religion, mathematics and natural sciences as well as sport), vocational training content is offered at the Wilhelm Knapp School (WKS) in the field of business conveyed. This includes economics, accounting and data processing. With the completion of the 13th grade, the students receive the Abitur (general higher education entrance qualification). By leaving grade 12, the school-based part of the advanced technical college entrance qualification is certified without an additional examination.

Technical college

The WKS offers the technical college with a focus on business / administration. In line with technical progress, students at the technical college have had access to laptop classes since the 2006/07 school year .

Higher business school

Anyone who has already obtained a secondary school diploma can acquire basic commercial training within two years by attending a commercial college. Various apprenticeships such as office clerk , industrial clerk or clerk in wholesale and foreign trade count the completion of the commercial college as the first year of training.

Vocational school

The two-year vocational school follows on from the secondary school leaving certificate and provides the pupils with a broad-based, vocational basic education. It combines general and professional learning and is divided into the occupational fields of electrical engineering, medical-technical and nursing professions, and business and administration. In the first year of training, practical training is sought. Successful completion can, depending on the training company, lead to a one-year reduction in training time. The second year of training is aimed at general learning. After successfully completing the second year of training, the student receives an intermediate level of education and a legally guaranteed right to shorten the apprenticeship period by one year.

Basic vocational training year

In the basic vocational training year (BGJ), basic vocational training is to be imparted on the basis of theoretical, practical and general instruction. The WKS offers the basic year of education in the professional fields of metal technology, wood technology, business and administration as well as nutrition and housekeeping for young people who have completed their regular school years and have already decided on a certain profession. After successful completion, the secondary school certificate is recognized and the time completed is credited in the subsequent training.

Vocational preparation year

Young people who have completed their statutory full-time compulsory schooling can attend the vocational preparation year (BVJ) for one year in order to orientate themselves professionally. Here they can identify their skills and then either begin vocational training, enter a profession directly or complete the basic vocational training year in the respective professional field. Metal, electrical or wood technology as well as nutrition and housekeeping are offered at the WKS . After successfully attending the BVJ, a qualification equivalent to the secondary school qualification is recognized in the certificate.

Integration into the professional and working world

Integration into the world of work and work (EiBE) enables young people who have already completed their full-time compulsory education to successfully prepare for vocational training or employment. By promoting German language skills or mathematics, the students should be able to work through their weaknesses in these subjects. An illustration of occupational fields with a focus on metal technology, electrical engineering, wood technology or nutrition / housekeeping also serves to deepen knowledge in these subject areas. This takes place over a period of one to two years, depending on the level of performance or profession, and is concluded with an examination at the end. After passing this successfully, the student receives a qualified secondary school leaving certificate. After nine years of compulsory full-time schooling, adolescents aged 15 to 18 can be admitted as admission requirements and duration.
