Wilhelm Hölscher

Hermann Wilhelm Heinrich Hölscher (born April 22, 1845 in Norden (East Friesland) , † March 11, 1911 in Leipzig ) was a Protestant theologian and most recently pastor at the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig .

Life

Hölscher was born the son of notary and lawyer Uvo Adolf Hölscher (1805–1863); his brother was the Goslar pedagogue, archivist and historian Uvo Hölscher (1847–1914). He spent the first 15 years of his life in his birthplace. From 1860 he attended high school in Osnabrück and studied from 1863 to 1866 in Tübingen , Berlin and Göttingen . From 1866 to 1871 he worked as a private tutor in Courland , was assistant preacher in 1872, pastor in Norden in 1876 and in 1880 conventual and director of studies in Loccum monastery .

From 1885 he was pastor of the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1886 by the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig . Until 1910 he headed the university's catechetical department.

Hölscher was the editor of the “General Evangelical Lutheran Church Newspaper” founded by Christoph Ernst Luthardt (until 1911) and the “Theological Literature Gazette” (until 1909). His son Gustav Hölscher followed in his footsteps, studied theology and, as an Old Testament scholar, held several professorships at German universities. The younger son Uvo Adolf Hölscher was an architect and building researcher.
