Born at the time of the German Empire , Wilhelm Metzig studied from 1908 to 1912 at the Hanoverian "Handwerks- und Kunstgewerbeschule " and then went self-employed as a (utility) graphic designer . In the same year he designed his first posters . Metzig's range of services included the design of books or, as a commercial artist, for example, the design of trademarks or packaging design .

Initially, Wilhelm Metzig received his orders primarily from companies based in Hanover as well as from the Hanover city administration and the Hanover tourist association . Metzig was friends with the Hanover-based architect Wilhelm Hofmann and with Karl Wiechert , who worked for a short time in Metzig's studio .

At the suggestion of the municipal building authority, Wilhelm Metzig redesigned the Hanover coat of arms, which is valid to the present day, in the spirit of New Objectivity.

Metzig, who among other things designed the signage and the company logo for the company “Günther Wagner - Pelikan-Werke” , also designed the commemorative publication for the 100th anniversary of the company during the Nazi era in 1937/38 .

In the middle of World War II , Metzig emigrated to New York City on August 8, 1941, where he in turn designed books and book covers for various publishers , including companies such as "Dutton, Messner, Punam [and] Lippincott ".

Wilhelm Metzig died in New York in 1989.
