Wilhelm Trellenkamp (* 1826 in Sterkrade , Duisburg district ; † January 14, 1878 in Orsoy , Moers district ) was a German history and portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Trellenkamp received training as a teacher at the teachers' seminar in Kempen . He then worked as an elementary teacher in Krefeld . In 1852 he followed his wish to devote himself to art and began studying painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , which he completed in 1859. There Andreas and Karl Müller , Karl Ferdinand's son , Wilhelm von Schadow and Eduard Bendemann were his teachers. Then Trellenkamp worked as a history painter, mainly creating religious motifs for churches, as well as book illustrations. One of his portraits is the one of his childhood friend Wilhelm Herchenbach . Often affected by illness, he lived very withdrawn and died after a long period of suffering in the Catholic Marien Hospital of the Sisters of Mercy in Orsoy.
