Gustav Wendt

Gustav Wendt (born January 24, 1827 in Berlin , † March 6, 1912 in Karlsruhe ) was a German high school teacher in Pomerania , Hamm and Karlsruhe.

Life

Gustav Wendt was the only son of Heinrich Wendt (1803-1859) and his wife Mathilde, née Köhler. He attended the Friedrich Wilhelm High School in Poznan , where his father was the first director. After graduating from high school, he studied classical philology at the universities of Berlin , Bonn and Halle . During his studies in 1845 he became a member of the Fridericia Bonn fraternity . He completed his probationary year at his school in Poznan . Permanently employed there in June 1851, he went to Michaelis in 1851 as a collaborator at the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin . In 1854 he came to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Greifenberg an der Rega as Vice-Rector . On December 15, 1856 he was appointed director of the Royal High School in Hamm .

Wendt was one of the youngest Prussian high school directors, but had opponents among his superiors because of his church-critical and liberal attitudes. Therefore, in 1867 he moved to the Lyceum Karlsruhe in the liberal Grand Duchy of Baden . He was appointed to the high school board and entrusted with the reorganization of the school system in Baden. In his handbook of education and teaching , he presented his basic views. He gained special recognition for the translation of Sophocles' tragedies into German . He was friends with Johannes Brahms .

Wendt headed the Karlsruhe grammar school for four decades. Not until 1907, at the age of 80, did he retire . When he died five years later, Grand Duke Friedrich II came to the funeral.

Wendt was married to the daughter Anna (1831-1892) of the Szczecin entomologist Carl August Dohrn ; the couple had 7 children. One of the grandchildren was Wilhelm Furtwängler .

  • 1875: full member of the high school board
  • 1886: Privy Councilor
  • 1894: Go. Council III. class
  • In 1907, when he retired, he was awarded the title of Geh. Council II. Class
