Wilhelm von Bippen (born November 5, 1844 in Lübeck , † August 22, 1923 in Bremen ) was a German archivist and an important Bremen historian .

biography

Wilhelm von Bippen was the son of the doctor and writer of the same name . After his school days at the Katharineum in Lübeck , which he graduated from high school at Easter 1864, he studied law at the University of Bonn , where he became a member of the Alemannia Bonn fraternity , but then history at the University of Göttingen . In 1868, he was here with a dissertation on the Versus de vita Vicelini and Sido of Neumünster Dr. phil. PhD . At the court of the Counts and Princes of Waldeck-Pyrmont in Arolsen , he was a prince educator .

In 1870 he was commissioned by the Bremen Council as the successor to Diedrich Ehmck with the processing of the Bremen document book . He wrote a large number of treatises on the history of Bremen and on cultural history.

In 1875 von Bippen became city ​​archivist with the position of 3rd government secretary . By 1886 he had completed four volumes of the Bremen document book . Volume 5 finally followed in 1902. During this time, the city archive on the Tiefer in Bremen was relocated.

From 1887 he wrote a work on the history of Bremen, which appeared in 3 volumes from 1892 to 1904. From 1875 to 1881 and 1893 to 1912 he was chairman of the historical society in Bremen. He oversaw the publication of the Bremen yearbook . He also published the 19th century biography of Bremen in 1912 .

He was also secretary of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People from 1872 to 1874 . In a commission for the preservation of art historical monuments, he dealt with the architecture of parish and religious churches in Bremen. His biography on Mayor Johann Smidt is considered a late work . In 1894 he was elected a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

Due to health reasons, he resigned from the archives service in 1914, but took on this role as a substitute during the First World War .
