Hermann Entholt

Hermann Entholt (born December 9, 1870 in Bremen , † September 23, 1957 in Bremen) was a German historian , educator and archive director in Bremen.

biography

Entholt was the son of Friedrich Entholt (1823–1916), teacher and chairman of the forward association . He attended high school in Bremen. He studied history and modern languages at the University of Leipzig , the University of Tübingen and the University of Strasbourg ; In 1896 he received his doctorate . As a Tübingen student, he joined the Igel Academic Association in Tübingen in the winter semester of 1890/91 .

In 1897 Entholt took on the role of a scientific assistant teacher at the commercial school in Bremen and in 1898 he became a senior teacher there. From 1904 he worked at the New Gymnasium (later Gymnasium am Barkhof ). In 1913 he received the title of professor. After joining the Historical Society in Bremen around 1899 , he was chairman of the association from 1912 to 1950.

In 1914, Entholt became Senate Secretary and head of the Bremen State Archives . After his time as a reserve officer in World War I , he again ran the State Archives. For the historical society he edited the Bremen yearbook and for the state archive from 1928 the regular publications and the Bremen Christmas papers . He was also the author of various works and writings on the cultural and commercial history of Bremen and the Bremen grammar school (1899, 1909, 1911).

In 1930, Entholt was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

Retired in 1936 . From now until 1943 he wrote the continuation of the Bremen document book . After the Second World War , the conservative Entholt, who was not a National Socialist, was again head of the State Archives from 1945 to 1949, and from 1945 to 1950 he was also director of the Bremen State Library . From 1933 to 1936 and from 1946 to 1954 he was President of the Wittheit zu Bremen . He also worked in the Historical Commission for Lower Saxony and in the Hanseatic History Association .

The Hermann-Entholt Street in Bremen- Obervieland bears his name.
