Wilhelm Joseph Freiherr von Horn (born December 21, 1784 in Kaiserslautern , † January 17, 1847 in Speyer ) was a Bavarian major general .

Life

origin

He was the son of Johann Philipp von Horn and his wife Louise Josefa, née von Wrede, sister of the Bavarian field marshal Carl Philipp von Wrede, the court judge from the Electoral Palatinate and land clerk of the Kaiserslautern regional office . The grandfather Wilhelm Joseph Horn had already been raised to the imperial nobility in 1783 as a member of the Electoral Palatinate government and land clerk; Johann Philipp von Horn received the title of baron in the Electoral Palatinate in 1791.

Military career

Horn joined the engineering corps of the Bavarian Army in 1801 and became a lieutenant in 1804 . In 1807 he was transferred to the Quartermaster General . During the war years of 1805/07 and 1809 he was constantly deployed at the side of his uncle Carl Philipp von Wrede; In 1807 he was wounded at Pultusk . Promoted to captain in 1809 and major in 1812 , Horn took part in the campaign against Russia , as well as the wars of liberation against France in 1813/15.

In 1817 Horn became a lieutenant colonel , in 1824 a colonel and commander of the 6th Line Infantry Regiment , and in 1832 he was promoted to major general and brigadier (chief) of the 4th Army Brigade in Speyer. Thus he was the highest ranking Bavarian soldier in the Rheinpfalz . On January 1, 1840, King Ludwig I awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown .

After his death, Horn was buried in the catholic part of the old cemetery in Speyer . His tombstone (with a weathered family coat of arms) is now in the separate cathedral chapter cemetery.

family

The officer was married to Maria Anna Hager. Her sons Karl (1818–1896) and Max (1821–1889), who were born in Speyer , also became high-ranking Bavarian officers in the rank of general. The daughter Mathilde (1822–1862) married the iron industrialist Carl von Gienanth (1818–1890), son of Baron Ludwig von Gienanth . Horn's grandson Carl (1847–1923) served as Minister of War in 1905/12 .

The President of the Palatinate Government and Speyer honorary citizen Karl Theodor von Wrede (1797–1871) was his cousin.
