Willi König (meteorologist)
Willi König (born November 2, 1884 in Veßra Abbey near Schleusingen , † October 31, 1955 in Berlin ) was a German meteorologist .
Life
The son of an elementary school teacher studied physics and geography in Marburg , Leipzig and Berlin from 1903 . In Berlin, as a pupil of Gustav Hellmann , he mainly dealt with meteorology and received his doctorate in 1909 with studies on the dry and hot summer of 1904 .
From 1910 to 1935, König worked at the Prussian Meteorological Institute , with interruptions due to military service in the First World War . Initially as a scientific assistant, he devoted himself to researching particular weather phenomena with the help of synoptic methods . König developed a new method for daily weather forecasting, using Vilhelm Bjerknes ' polar front theory .
In 1923 he became head of the weather department and in 1927 head of department and professor at the Prussian Meteorological Institute. As head of the German Weather Service , König also dealt with issues of climate research. In a newspaper article in 1927, he vehemently denied the question of whether the mild winters of previous years could be an indication of long-term climate change.
From 1931 to 1935, König taught as an honorary professor at the University of Berlin , until in 1935 he moved to the Deutsche Seewarte in Hamburg as head of the meteorological department . After working at the Technical University of Dresden and as chief meteorologist in Munich , he took over the management of the Berlin Weather Service School in 1940.
After the Second World War , he became a professor at Berlin University and, from 1950, he was also head of the Central Meteorological Observatory on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam . From 1953 until his death, König was also deputy head of the Meteorological Service in the GDR .
From 1950 to 1953 Willi König was editor-in-chief of the Zeitschrift für Meteorologie .
His grave is on the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .
