Willi Schalk

Willi Schalk (born March 2, 1940 in Aschaffenburg ) is a German manager . He was an advertising manager for national and international advertising agencies for many years and held various positions on the supervisory board.

Life

In 1956, Schalk began his professional career with the industrial group Enka Glanzstoff AG in Wuppertal . There he trained as an industrial clerk and became a product manager in 1959. From 1963, Schalk was appointed head of marketing. From 1966 Schalk entered the advertising industry. He became managing partner of Special Team GmbH in Düsseldorf, which was later taken over by the BBDO group. Here Schalk handled orders from brands such as Audi , Bärenmarke and Tchibo . Schalk became Managing Director from 1975 and Chairman of the TEAM / BBDO group from 1976. From 1977 to 1986 Schalk held various management positions at BBDO Worldwide, Inc. in New York . At the same time, Schalk was CEO of the BBDO Group Germany in Düsseldorf from 1975 to 1990.

From 1986 to 1989 Schalk was a co-founder and board member of the Omnicom Group, Inc. in New York. At the time, Omnicom Group, Inc. was the largest advertising agency in the global market.

In 1990 Schalk switched to the media industry. Until 1993 Schalk was chairman of the management board of the M.DuMont Schauberg publishing group in Cologne and then a member of the board of directors of Axel Springer AG in Berlin and Hamburg . From 1994 Schalk was Helmut Kohl's personal advisor .

From 1994 to 1996 Schalk was the managing partner of the consulting firm TEAM Consulting GmbH in Ratingen.

From 1997 to 2000, Schalk returned to the advertising industry as CEO of McCann-Erickson Deutschland GmbH.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Schalk was a member of various supervisory boards, for example Kaufhof AG (1990–1996), Sat.1 GmbH (1990–1994), Schwarzkopf GmbH (1994–1996) and Coca Cola Erfrischungsgetränke GmbH (1990 -1994). In addition, he was chairman of the supervisory board of Radio NRW GmbH (1990–1994).

Schalk advised various clients on a pro bono basis, including a. UNICEF and UNESCO .

Schalk was involved in founding the Scientific Society for Market-Oriented Management. V. participated in 1981 and is still a member today. Schalk has been a member of the International Advertising Association since 1986. From 1991 to 2012 Schalk was editor of the advertising yearbook at Econ Verlag .

He was one of Helmut Kohl's donors who wanted to reduce the impact of the CDU donation affair on the CDU.

In 2017, Schalk initiated a scientific study in the book "... And so it goes on - the origins and future of the advertising industry" by the HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management , which was carried out by Manfred Kirchgeorg.

Awards

In 2001, Schalk was appointed a founding member of the Hall of Fame for German Advertising .
