Willhelm Thaller
Willy Thaller , also Willi Thaller , (born August 17, 1854 in Graz , † April 1, 1941 or April 6, 1941 in Vienna ) was an Austrian folk actor and singer ( baritone ).
Life
Willi Thaller already performed as a child at the Graz City Theater under the direction of Ignaz Czernitz . actually he was supposed to be a bookbinder according to his father's wishes. Since he preferred to be an actor, but couldn't find any support, he ran away from home and joined a small theater company in Bruck an der Mur . He made his debut as a "waiter" in the comedy Der Narr von Untersberg .
After a few years as a traveling comedian and engagements in Klagenfurt, Warasdin , Cilli , Pettau, Laibach, Olmütz and Teplitz, he was permanently engaged at the city theater in Graz from 1878. From 1881 to 1883 he was engaged at the Vienna Carltheater , then at the Vienna Volkstheater and the Raimundtheater .
As part of a North American tour with Marie Geistinger , guest appearances in New York, Philadelphia and Chicago followed. From 1885 he played at the Deutsches Theater in Prague . From 1924 he was a member of the ensemble at the Vienna Burgtheater and played at the Akademietheater with Raoul Aslan and Rosa Albach-Retty, among others .
At the theater, Willi Thaller specialized in comic operetta roles and plays by Nestroy and Ludwig Anzengruber . He also celebrated success in Der Bettelstudent in the role of Colonel Ollendorf and as Johann Strauss' father in the Singspiel - Pasticcio Walzer from Vienna .
His younger sister Kathi also became a singer and actress.

Awards
The Austrian Federal President Michael Hainisch bestowed him the professional titles " Hofrat " and " Chamber actor ". He is an honorary citizen of the City of Vienna . The Willi-Thaller-Strasse in Graz was also named after him. Willi Thaller is buried in an honorary grave of the City of Vienna at the Vienna Central Cemetery , 15 / E / 3/16.
