William Avenya

William Amove Avenya (born June 21, 1955 in Ishangev Tiev , Konshisha Local Government Area, Benue , Nigeria ) is Bishop of Gboko .

Life

William Amove Avenya was ordained a priest on May 30, 1981 after studying philosophy and theology at the Major Seminary in Jos . In 1981/82 he was first active in the pastoral care of the parish of St. Charles in Adoka, then vicar in St. William in Lafia. From 1982 to 1984 he taught at the seminary in Gbarnga in Liberia . From 1984 to 1989 he completed a master's degree in education at the University of Manchester , which he completed with a doctorate ( PhD ). In 1990 he became director of the Catholic Education Services in Makurdi. Since 1996 Avenya has been general secretary of the Association of Bishops' Conferences of Anglophone West Africa (AECAWA), interrupted by a further training course in Management and Development of Non-Governmental Organizations at the Galilee International Management Institute (GIMI) in Israel.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on November 28, 2008 titular bishop of Thucca in Mauretania and auxiliary bishop in Makurdi . The bishop of Makurdi, Athanasius Atule Usuh , donated his episcopal ordination on January 24, 2009 ; Co- consecrators were Renzo Fratini , Apostolic Nuncio in Nigeria , and John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan , Archbishop of Abuja .

On December 29, 2012 he was welcomed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed bishop of the newly founded diocese of Gboko .
