William Franklin Avery Jr. (Born August 8, 1979 in Augusta , Georgia ) is a retired American basketball player . He played mainly in the position of point guard .

Before starting his professional career, he played at Duke University and was - when he left the university after his "sophomore" year - selected in 14th place in the 1999 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves . In the NBA, however, he disappointed and came in three years and 142 games for the Timberwolves only 2.7 points and 1.7 basket assists per game.

When his three-year contract expired in 2002, no other NBA team was interested in him and so he moved to Europe, where he initially played in the French LNB Pro A , the Israeli Ligat ha'Al , in the Ukrainian " Wyscha Liga " and in the Greek A1 Ethniki played. In the 2006/2007 season, Avery was under contract in the German basketball league with ALBA from Berlin , where he was the regular starter in the position of point guard. Due to injury breaks, he had a mixed year and ALBA could not achieve his ambitious sporting goals, which is why he went back to Greece after a follow-up contract with Galatasaray Café Crown broke, where he worked for AEK Athens and then the first division promoted AS Trikala 2000 went basket hunting. For the 2009/2010 season he signed a contract with PAOK Saloniki, which was terminated prematurely. In 2011 he attempted a comeback with Iraklis and Energa Czarni from Słupsk in Poland .
