William Clark Junior

William Clark, Jr. (born October 12, 1930 in Oakland , California , † January 22, 2008 in Washington, DC ) was an American diplomat who served as Ambassador to India from 1989 to 1992 and Assistant Secretary from 1992 to 1993 of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs .

Life

Clark joined the US Navy in 1949 after attending school and served there until 1953. He then completed an undergraduate degree at San José State College , from which he graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then studied law at the Law School of the University of Southern California (USC) and international relations at Columbia University . He then joined the diplomatic service of the US State Department and found various uses at home and abroad. In 1981 he became Permanent Representative of the Ambassador to Japan and subsequently served as Permanent Representative of the Ambassador to Egypt between 1985 and 1986 . After Nicholas A. Veliotes left the post of ambassador on April 1, 1986, Clark acted as an interim ambassador in Egypt from April 1 until Frank Wisner took office on August 28, 1986.

After his return to the US Clark between 1986 and 1989 was Principal Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs and representatives of the then Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Gaston J. Sigur, Jr. He then broke the December 22, 1989 John R. Hubbard resigned as Ambassador to India and remained in that post until July 2, 1992. As the successor to Richard H. Solomon , he was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs on July 10, 1992 , whereby he was head of the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs . He held this office until April 23, 1993 and was replaced by Winston Lord .

Clark, who was also involved in the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Diplomacy , was subsequently Japan Consultant and Senior Advisor for Asia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), one in Washington, DC, from 1993 to 1995 based independent think tank . In 1996 he was President of the US Japan Society.

His marriage to Judith Clark had a son.
