Winston Lord

Winston Lord (born August 14, 1937 in New York City ) is an American government official and diplomat . He was president of the Council on Foreign Relations from 1977 to 1985.

In 1972, Lord was a key figure in restoring US relations with the People's Republic of China . From 1969 to 1973 he was a member of the National Security Council in the planning committee. He was an advisor to the National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger , whom he accompanied on his trip to Beijing in 1971. The following year he was a member of the US delegation to President Nixon's visit to China. Lord was later (1973-1977) director of policy planning and top adviser to the US State Department concerning matters that China, US Ambassador to China (1985-1989) and Secretary ( Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs ) in the first term of US President Bill Clinton .

biography

Lord is the second of three sons of Oswald Bates Lord (1903–1986) and his wife Mary Stinson Pillsbury (1904–1978), a granddaughter of Charles Stinson Pillsbury, the founder of the Pillsbury Company . The parents had married in Minneapolis in 1929 . His older brother Richard died in 1935 at the age of three months. His younger brother is Charles Pillsbury Lord. His mother was from 1,958 to 1,960 delegates at the United Nations General Assembly and 1953-1961 Representative of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UN Human Rights Commission). She also received the Freedom Award from the International Rescue Committee . In 1935, Mary Pillsbury Lord and her sister survived the sinking of the American passenger liner Mohawk , in which 47 people were killed.

Winston Lord has been married to Sino-American author and human rights activist Bette Bao Lord since 1963 and has a son and a daughter. He graduated from the Yale University in 1959 successfully ( magna cum laude ) and was also in the Yale at that time student connection Skull & Bones added. He received the Master of Arts -Titel at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1960. He also received by the Universities of Williams College , Tufts University , Dominican College and Bryant College each have an honorary doctorate awarded.
