William Emanuel Richardson

William Emanuel Richardson (born September 3, 1886 in Berks County , Pennsylvania , †  November 3, 1948 in Wyomissing , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1937 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

While he was a child, William Richardson, who was born on a farm, moved with his parents to Bernville , where he attended public schools. He then studied at Princeton University until 1910 . After a subsequent law degree at Columbia University in New York City and his admission to the bar in 1913, he began to work in Reading in this profession. In 1915 he was in an ambulance in Belgium and France during the First World War . This was not yet an official war effort, as the United States did not enter the war until April 1917. In 1916, Richardson served as a member of the New York National Guard in a border conflict with Mexico on the local border. Between 1917 and 1919 he served in various units in the US Army during the First World War. He made it up to the first lieutenant. After the war he practiced as a lawyer again. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1932 congressional election , Richardson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 14th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Norton Lewis Lichtenwalner on March 4, 1933 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1937 . During this time, the Roosevelt government's first New Deal laws were passed there. In 1935 the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd. In 1936, Richardson was a delegate to an inter-parliamentary conference in Budapest . In the same year he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, William Richardson worked again as a lawyer. He died on November 3, 1948 in Wyomissing.
