William George "Borneo" Gregory (born May 14, 1957 in Lockport , New York State ) is a former American astronaut .

Gregory received a degree in mechanical engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in 1979 and a masters degree in mechanical engineering from Columbia University in 1980 . In 1984 he received a Masters in Management from Troy State University .

From 1981 to 1986 Gregory was a fighter pilot and pilot instructor in Lakenheath, England and at Cannon Air Force Base , New Mexico. In 1987 he attended the US Air Force Test Pilot School and was used as a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base in California from 1988 to 1990 .

Astronaut activity

In January 1990, Gregory was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate. In addition to various other activities in the astronauts office, he was also head of the spacecraft operations department.

STS-67

On his first and only space mission, Gregory flew into space on March 2, 1995 as a pilot of the space shuttle Endeavor . It was the astro-observatory's second flight with three ultra-violet telescopes on board. The flight lasted over 16 days and ended with landing on March 18, 1995 at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

In the summer of 1999 Gregory left NASA and the Air Force and worked until August 2008 as Manager of Business Development for Honeywell in Phoenix , then for Micro-Tronics . In November 2010 he became Head of Business Development at Qwaltec in Tempe .

Life and private life

William Gregory is of Albanian descent, the family is originally from Korça . Gregory was baptized in St. Elijah's Albanian Orthodox Church in Jamestown, New York. Gregory is married with two children.
