William Hanna Shomali (born May 15, 1950 in Bait Sahur , West Bank ) is a Jordanian theologian and Patriarchal Vicar of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem for Jordan .

Life

William Hanna Shomali entered the Beit Jala Minor Seminary in 1961 and later the Beit Jala Seminary . After graduating in Philosophy and Theology, he was ordained a priest on June 24, 1972 . He was then chaplain in Zarqa , Jordan and pastor in Shatana , Jordan. In 1980 he completed a postgraduate course in English literature at Yarmuk University and was a lecturer, later director of the Minor Seminary of Beit Jala. In 1989 he completed a doctorate in liturgical science at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo in Rome and was professor of liturgy, vice-rector and dean of studies at the Faculty of Philosophy and Theology of the Major Seminary in Beit Jala.

In 1998 he became the General Administrator and Economist of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. In 2005 Shomali was appointed rector of the Latin Patriarchate Seminary in Beit Jala. In 2009 he was appointed Chancellor of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed William Hanna Shomali on March 31, 2010 titular Bishop of Lydda and appointed him to succeed Kamal Bathish as auxiliary bishop in the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. He was first responsible as Patriarchal Vicar for Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Jordan and Cyprus. He was ordained bishop on May 27 of the same year by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal , in Bethlehem; Co-consecrators were the two auxiliary bishops in the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Salim Sayegh and Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo .

Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa OFM appointed Bishop Shomali to succeed Archbishop Maroun Lahham as Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan on February 8, 2017 . On July 8, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue .
