William John McNaughton

William John McNaughton MM ( December 7, 1926 in Lawrence ; † February 3, 2020 in Methuen ) was an American religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Incheon .

Life

William John McNaughton joined the congregation of Maryknoll Missionaries in 1948 and was ordained a priest on June 13, 1953 after completing his theological training at the religious seminary . After studying the Korean language at Yale University , he went to the Chungbuk Mission in central South Korea and served as a pastor. When the Diocese of Cheongju was founded, he became its vicar general in 1959/60 .

Pope John XXIII appointed him on June 6, 1961 first Vicar Apostolic of Inch'on and Titular Bishop of Thuburbo Minus . The Archbishop of Boston Richard James Cardinal Cushing donated him episcopal ordination on August 24 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were John William Comber MM, Superior General of the Maryknoll Missionaries, and Petrus Canisius Jean van Lierde OESA , Vicar General of the Vatican . On March 10, 1962, he was named the first bishop of Incheon.

McNaughton attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a Council Father. From 1965 to 1981 he was secretary of the Bishops' Conference of South Korea and President of the Liturgy Commission, Ecumenical Commission and other institutions. On April 25, 2002, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
