William Kelly (born May 1821 in Millisle , County Down , Northern Ireland , † March 27, 1906 in Exeter , England ) was a Northern Irish specialist in ancient languages, Bible interpreter, author and preacher of the Brethren movement .

Live and act

William Kelly was the son of a Northern Irish landowner who died when William was only two years old. He also had an older sister named Sarah. His education took place first in Downpatrick and then at Trinity College Dublin , where he studied the ancient languages Hebrew, Greek and Latin. He trained as a Protestant clergyman and sympathized with Puseyism , a kind of Anglo-Catholicism , until he experienced a revival shortly after graduation and turned away from the Anglican state church in 1841. Because he was too young to be ordained , he went to the island of Sark , part of the Channel Islands , as a private tutor , where he was taught by a Christian named Acland. In 1842 he moved to the larger island of Guernsey , where he lived until 1871.

In 1845, at the age of 24, he first met John Nelson Darby (1800–1882), who made a great impression on him, influenced him and with whom he worked for over 35 years. At the same time he studied the Bible intensively , preached and taught and took part in the Christian community of "brothers". From 1849 to 1850 he published the magazine The Prospect , in which he published his early works. From 1854 to 1856 he published numerous critical commentaries in Lewis Hippolytus Joseph Tonna's magazine The Christian Annotator . From 1856 he published the monthly magazine The Bible Treasury , founded shortly before by Alexander A. Wallace , which contained Bible studies, scriptures, teacher's discussions, field reports and book reviews. In addition to his own articles, he published articles by John Gifford Bellett (1795–1864), JN Darby, JG Deck, WW Fereday, FW Grant, WJ Hocking, A. Miller, FG Patterson, W. Trotter, GV Wigram and other related persons.

Kelly edited the Collected Writings of JN Darby , which comprised 34 volumes , for many years . The Synopsis of the Books of the Bible (" synopsis of the books of the Bible "), which he considered Darby's best single work, was published separately. He also wrote his own works that dealt with the Bible and individual books, such as the Introductory Lectures , three volumes on the Old and New Testaments . Kelly's writings were often created on the occasion of his many lectures, which were co-written by the audience. His 11 lectures on the introduction to the Gospels in 1866 and the New Testament in 1868 in London attracted particular attention and attracted a large audience .

He also wrote 12 sacred songs, which he published in 1894 in the Hymns selected and revised collection , which comprised a total of 436 songs. He fought the spread of materialism, liberalism and ritualism. So he wrote against the encyclical of Pope Leo XIII. on the unity of the church Satis cognitum (1896), and he had conversations with former Catholic priests, monks and other educated personalities in England and France. In 1871 he moved from Guernsey to Blackheath near London, probably in order to be able to carry out his service as a travel preacher more easily. There he also put together a collection of 15,000 books that he gave away a few years before his death.

Kelly died on March 27, 1906 at his friend Heyman Wreford's house in Exeter, and was buried on March 31 in Charlton Cemetery near his second wife. About five hundred people attended the funeral service.

family

Kelly married Elizabeth Montgomery of Guernsey in 1848, who died shortly after the birth of their second child in 1850. His second wife was Elizabeth Emily Gipps from 1857, the daughter of a pastor from Hereford , with whom he had four more daughters. As a linguist, she supported him in his service as a Bible translator of the Psalms. She died in 1884.
