William Wood, 1st Baron Hatherley
William Page Wood, 1st Baron Hatherley PC (born November 29, 1801 in London - † July 10, 1881 ibid) was a British statesman and legal scholar.
Life
William Wood, born the second son of Matthew Wood , the longtime representative of the City of London in Parliament, was educated at Winchester College , studied at Trinity College , Cambridge , was admitted to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1827 and served from 1847 to 1852 for the Oxford constituency Member of the House of Commons , in which he joined the Liberal Party .
From 1849 to 1851 he was Vice Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster . He was knighted in 1851 , was the successor to Alexander Cockburn Solicitor General from 1851 to 1852 and then held the office of Vice Chancellor of the High Court of Justice , who is in fact the President of the Chancery Division of that court.
In 1868 Wood entered the Ministry of Gladstone as Lord Chancellor and, since he had to preside over the House of Lords as such , was promoted to peer as Baron Hatherley , of Down Hatherley in the County of Gloucester .
In October 1872 he resigned from office because of weak eyes and died on July 10, 1881. His title expired on his death because his marriage remained childless.
Politically liberal, Hatherley belonged to the ecclesiastical Orthodox party, as his writing shows: Continuity of Scripture as declared by the testimony of our Lord (4th ed. 1870).
