Willibald Kaehler

Hans Emmerich Willibald Kaehler (born January 2, 1866 in Berlin ; † October 17, 1938 in Kleinmachnow ) was a German conductor, composer and general music director in Mannheim and Schwerin .

Life

Kaehler, whose father was a teacher, graduated from secondary school in Grünberg (Silesia) and studied from 1884 to 1887 at the Berlin Music Academy . His first job was as a solo coach at the Hoftheater Hannover . Stations as Kapellmeister followed in Freiburg im Breisgau , Basel and Regensburg . From 1897 to 1899 he was first Kapellmeister in Rostock and from 1899 to 1906 general music director at the Mannheim National Theater . At the same time he was an assistant at the Bayreuth Festival from 1896 to 1901 .

In 1906 he was appointed grand ducal court conductor in Schwerin. Here he stayed for a quarter of a century, even after 1918, from 1924 on as general music director of the Staatskapelle. In Schwerin he got several first performances. He was the conductor of the 14th and 15th Mecklenburg Music Festival (1909, 1922) and brought the 58th Tonkünstlerfest of the General German Music Association to Schwerin in 1928. In 1931 he retired with performances of Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Wagner's Die Meistersinger ; Werner Ladwig was his successor . Kaehler moved to Gauting .

Kaehler was a sought-after Wagner interpreter and conducted Der Ring des Nibelungen as a guest conductor in Barcelona in 1907 . In 1924/25 he conducted Wagner's Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival .

Works

Kaehler composed male choirs, songs and piano pieces.
