Willis H. Flygare
Willis H. "Bill" Flygare (born July 24, 1936 in Jackson , Minnesota , † May 18, 1981 in Urbana , Illinois ) was an American physical chemist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign .
Flygare earned a bachelor's degree in 1958 from St. Olaf College and in 1961 a Ph.D. from William D. Gwinn at the University of California, Berkeley with the thesis Chlorine nuclear quadrupole interaction and microwave spectra of C₃H₄Cl₂, CH₂Cl₂, and CH₃CHCl₂. in chemistry . In the same year he received a teaching position at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , where he was promoted to full professor of chemistry within a few years.
Flygare has made a name for itself in understanding molecular electronic structures and molecular dynamics by introducing high-resolution microwave techniques (using the Zeeman effect ) and other innovations. He made numerous theoretical and experimental contributions to light scattering in and structure of liquids , to radio astronomy and solid state chemistry . In his 20 years in Urbana, he published more than 200 scientific papers and a monograph, Molecular Structure and Dynamics , and led more than 30 students to Ph.D.
Flygare has received numerous awards, including a Sloan Research Fellowship in 1964 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1971 and 1978 , the Leo Hendrik Baekeland Award from the American Chemical Society in 1973 , the Centenary Prize from the Royal Society of Chemistry in 1975 and the Irving Langmuir Award from the American Chemical Society and 1981 American Physical Society . In 1974 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1976 he received an honorary doctorate from St. Olaf College .
Willis H. Flygare died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at the age of 44 . He had been married to Ruth Swansson since 1958 and the couple had four children.
In his honor, a special edition of the Journal of Chemical Physics was published in 1983 with 117 technical articles on 965 pages. The Journal of Physical Chemistry also published a special edition in Flygare's honor in 1983. Since 1984 there has been a Flygare Memorial Lecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign .
