Welcome to Switzerland is a documentary of Swiss filmmaker Sabine Gisiger from the year 2017 .

Synopsis

In the context of the refugee crisis in Europe , Gisiger observes how asylum seekers are dealt with in Switzerland. In 2015 there were almost 40,000 asylum applications in Switzerland and eight (ten since 2016) were assigned to the rich, 2,200-inhabitant Aargau municipality of Oberwil-Lieli . The village resisted accepting the refugees. The mayor and SVP politician Andreas Glarner wants to set an example and is more willing to pay CHF 290,000 fines. Soon there was resistance, personified by the student Johanna Gündel. She works with the interest group Solidarity against the no policy. Another protagonist is the then Green Aargau government councilor Susanne Hochuli , who was responsible for accommodating the asylum seekers. The events in Oberwil-Lieli are symbolic of the situation throughout the country. The film tells of Switzerland in times of so-called refugee crises and asks what this country in the middle of Europe was, wants to be or could become.
