The Windau valley , also called the Windau , is a southern side valley of the Tyrolean Brixental in the Kitzbühel Alps with a length of about 16 km.

The valley extends almost entirely to the municipality of Westendorf , only the northernmost part is in the municipality of Hopfgarten im Brixental . In the south the valley borders on the state of Salzburg . In the north - at Hopfgarten ( 623  m ) - the Windau and Brixental come together . The Windau is traversed by the Windauer Ache , which flows into the Brixentaler Ache .

In the 16th and 17th centuries, copper, galena and pebbles were mined in the valley.

The Windautal is a popular local recreation area , which offers ski tourers , hikers, mountain bikers and cyclists the best conditions. The path through the valley along the lower reaches of the Windauer Ache is part of the " Kaiser Tour", a long- distance cycle path that begins and ends in Kufstein . The Windauer Ache (difficulty level WW II to WW V) is very popular with whitewater paddlers.

In the valley lie the villages of Au, Oberwindau, Rettenbach, Schwaigerberg, Unterwindau and Vorderwindau in the Westendorf community. The valley is accessed by an 8.6 km long state road, the Windauer Straße. The southern part of the valley can only be reached by car via a toll road (partly unpaved) and is hardly populated.

The Salzburg-Tiroler-Bahn runs on a hillside and through several tunnels through the lower (northern) Windau Valley, where a bridge spans the valley in the middle of the loop . This so-called Windau loop , which uses the valley to gain altitude and is landscaped in an extremely attractive way, is a popular photo opportunity for railway photographers. The Windau stop is on the north-eastern edge of the valley .

The landscape of the valley is determined by wooded mountain forms and numerous alpine pastures. Above the tree line, the open slopes are used as grazing grounds for sheep, goats, cows and horses.

The Windau is surrounded by numerous mountain peaks, which mostly reach over 2000 m. Important mountains are the Steinbergstein ( 2215  m ), the Kröndlhorn ( 2444  m ) and the Brechhorn ( 2032  m ).
