Windrunner is a post-hardcore band founded in Hanoi in 2015 .

history

Windrunner was formed at the beginning of 2015 when musicians from the two disbanded rock bands Alive in Sight and Epione got together. The first permanent band consists of the singer Duong Bui, the two guitarists Trung Tôn and Nam Dao, the bassist Híu NT and the drummer David Hudd.

The EP VUI was published in mid-2015 with five titles on a physical and digital level. In Europe , this was released through the Japanese independent label First and Last Records, which also took over sales in Japan and Southeast Asia . Guest musicians included Michael Lawler from the multinational post-hardcore band In Vice Versa and Hoàng Long from Clockworks.

In September 2018, the band was signed by the US label Famined Records , whose distribution is taken over by the punk label Victory Records , and the debut album MAI was announced for November 30, 2018.

Windrunner already played in the opening act for bands like King Ly Chee , Attila , Secrets , Benighted and Coldburn , where they could be seen in several states in Southeast Asia. The British broadcaster BBC conducted a short two-and-a-half-minute interview with singer Duong Bui on the sidelines of the band's performance at a music festival in Vietnam in 2016.

In March 2019, the band will accompany Emmure to selected concerts on their Southeast Asia tour.

music

The group plays a classic twist on post-hardcore , comparable to groups like Invent, Animate , Crystal Lake and Earthists . Singer Duong Bui alternates between clear vocals and screaming . In terms of lyrics, the musicians process personal experiences, but also ancestor worship and Vietnamese traditions. The fact that singer Duong Bui took over both the clear vocals and the screaming vocals was due to the fact that the former shouter left the band.

Musically, the musicians are influenced by a wide variety of musical styles , from blues to extreme metal . Influences from Metalcore , Djent , Ambient and Dark Melodic in the group's music are attested.

The title of the debut album, Mai , was named after a spring flower. However, Mai can also be translated as “tomorrow” from Vietnamese . Individual song titles are also named after flowers and trees and represent the most varied of difficulties in life. According to Duong Bui, the lyrics on the debut album are also about perseverance.

Band name

The band name was inspired by the character from the video game Defense of the Ancients .
