The Winkelbach is a left bank tributary of the Thaler Bach in the Austrian state of Styria . It drains the northeastern part of the Thaler Basin near the provincial capital Graz .

course

The Winkelbach rises in the forest on the southern slope of the Reinerspitze in the north of the municipality of Thal. It initially runs as a periodic channel through a ditch that extends south-east and separates the two hamlets of Winkel and Oberbichl from one another. The stream then crosses grassland and agricultural areas before reaching settlement areas again. After a marked change of direction , the stream breaks through the limestone clod of the Graz Paleozoic era on the last kilometer and separates the Frauenkogel in the north from the Madersberg in the south. The ÖK calls this narrow section of the valley the Fuchsloch . After the municipal boundary between Thal and Graz- Gösting has been formed , the Winkelbach flows into the Thaler Graben in the creek of the same name .

Flood protection

Along with the Erlenbach, the Winkelbach is one of two larger tributaries of the Thaler Bach, which in the past caused widespread flooding, especially in Gösting. As with the Erlenbach, the flood risk management of the Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Regions and Tourism provides for the construction of a retention basin , which is to be implemented by 2027.
