Winter War (original title: Talvisota ) is a Finnish film from 1989 about a company of the Finnish infantry regiment JR23 in the winter war from November 30, 1939 to March 13, 1940. The film, an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Antti Tuuri , came on the 50 Anniversary of the start of fighting in Finnish cinemas. The film was first released in German in November 2015 on DVD and Blu-ray .

The film deals with the Finnish infantry regiment JR23, which consisted of men from southern Ostrobothnia , but above all a column of reservists from Kauhava . Director Pekka Parikka focused on the fate of the fighting troop. The main actors are the two brothers Martti and Paavo Hakala from the Finnish city of Kauhava.

Production and publication

Produced by National Filmi Oy for 199 minutes , it was the most expensive Finnish film to date until Dark Floors was released in 2008. The music was composed by Jukka Haavisto and Juha Tikka, and Keijo Virtanen was responsible for the editing.

When it premiered in Finland on November 30, 1989, the film was also released in Sweden. It has also appeared on videotape and DVD, including in Estonia and France.

The world's first release, based on a new 4K scan, was released in Germany on November 6, 2015 on DVD and Blu-ray with the theatrical version. In addition, another Blu-ray with the long version was released. Both versions contain German sound for the first time, which was dubbed especially for these releases.

Awards

In 1990 the film was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 1990 Berlinale . At the presentation of the Finnish Jussi Film Prize in 1990 , Talvisota won awards including best actor ( Taneli Mäkelä ), best director ( Pekka Parikka ), best music ( Juha Tikka ) and best supporting actor ( Vesa Vierikko ). Also in 1990 the Nordic Film Festival in Rouen won an award in the Best Actor category .

Television series

The original film was cut into a five-part miniseries for Finnish television, which first aired in 1991. The series was supplemented with an hour of additional scenes that were re-shot by Pekka Parikka after the theatrical release.
