Wojciech Kowalewski (born May 11, 1977 in Białystok , Poland ) is a former Polish football player .
Career
society
The 190 cm tall and 86 kg heavy goalkeeper Kowalewski began his football career with Wigry Suwałki in his native Poland. In 1997 he moved to the Polish capital club Legia Warsaw . There he was only number two between the Warsaw posts, behind Grzegorz Szamotulski and later behind Zbigniew Robakiewicz . After only one game in three years, Legia officials decided in January 2001 to loan him to competitor Groclin Grodzisk . The brief interlude at Grodzisk lasted 15 games. Finally, he returned to Warsaw in the summer and came regularly to Legia Warsaw until winter 2002. But since the club was planning with talent Artur Boruc and the Bulgarian Radostin Stanev , the goalkeeper decided on a transfer. In January 2002, Kovalevsky moved to the first Ukrainian league to Shakhtar Donetsk . There he had to compete with Shakhtar veteran Dmitro Shutkov and finally prevailed. He left Ukraine in August 2004 and signed with the Russian club Spartak Moscow . With the capital city club Kowalewski played in the UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League and rose there to the regular goalkeeper, which he referred youngster Aleksey Zuev to the substitution bench. Only when the Croatian Stipe Pletikosa was signed in 2007 did the Pole move into the second tier. Since the beginning of 2008, the goalkeeper has been back in his home country for Korona Kielce . For the 2008/09 season Kowalewski moved to Iraklis Saloniki in Greece . After 1½ years in Greece, he signed a contract with the Russian first division promoted FK Sibir Novosibirsk at the end of January 2010 . For Sibir Kowalewski played 14 league games, but could not prevent relegation. For the second half of the 2010/11 season he moved to Cyprus to Anorthosis Famagusta . However, Kowalewski was only used in one league game and ended his active football career in early 2012 due to problems with his spine.
National team
Kowalewski has played 11 times for the Polish national soccer team . On February 10, 2002, the goalkeeper made his debut in the game against the Faroe Islands in Poland. Six years later he was appointed to the A-Elf squad for the first time for a tournament. Kowalewski was in the Polish squad for the 2008 European Championship . However , he was not used behind regular goalkeeper Artur Boruc . The Poles were eliminated after the preliminary round. The goalkeeper played his last game on February 7, 2007 in a 2-2 draw against Slovakia . He was substituted on for Boruc in the 64th minute and conceded another goal in the 2-2 draw. Two years later, coach Stefan Majewski appointed him for the World Cup qualifier on October 10, 2009 against the Czech Republic . In the game, in which the Poles only had a high win and a simultaneous defeat by Slovenia against Slovakia, Kowalewski was in the starting line-up of his team. The game was lost 2-0. In the last insignificant group game four days later, he finally had to give way to compatriot Jerzy Dudek .
