Wolfgang Haße (born November 21, 1926 in Berlin ) is a German surgeon and pediatric surgeon .

Life

Wolfgang Haße finished his studies in 1954 at the Free University of Berlin . The doctorate to Dr. med. at the Free University of Berlin followed in 1954. He received his surgical training in Berlin and Hamburg. In 1960/61 Werner von Ekesparre went on to further training in pediatric surgery. In 1980 he acquired the sub-area of pediatric surgery in Berlin and in 1982 he was authorized to continue training in the sub-area of pediatric surgery.

From May 1962 he worked in the surgical clinic of the Free University of Berlin under Hermann Franke in the Westend hospital with a focus on pediatric surgery. There was no children's ward in the house, so that before and after operations an intensive consultation was necessary in the children's clinics in West Berlin . As a result of the activities, the vast majority of pediatric surgeries were concentrated in Westend. One of Haße's concerns was the collaboration with the pediatric oncologists Hansjörg Riehm and Günter Henze (University Children's Hospital KAVH ) and Helmut Ernst from the X-ray and radiation institute of the Free University of Berlin, Heinz Oeser , in a working group.

In 1965, Haße qualified as a professor in the subject "Surgery with a special focus on pediatric surgery". In 1966 he began teaching at the Medical Faculty specializing in pediatric surgery. In the same year he was appointed senior physician. After the surgical clinic moved to the Steglitz Clinic in 1969, the Rector of the Free University of Berlin appointed him Scientific Councilor and Professor of Surgery. He received largely independent privileges for setting up the pediatric surgery department with 26 beds that Haße helped to design.

On April 16, 1972, Haße took over the management of the pediatric surgery department of the children's clinic at the Rudolf Virchow Clinic (78 beds). The range of treatments continued to include neonatal, thoracic, abdominal and urological surgery. Around 1900 interventions were carried out annually, not including endoscopic examinations. Approx. 25% of the patient population was attributable to traumatology . In the first-aid surgery about 10 000 children were treated annually. Up until 1989, colleagues from Japan, Peru, Indonesia, Poland and other countries could still sit in on them, financially supported by the Berlin Senate.

In 1989, before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the 1st International Pediatric Surgical Symposium took place at the Rudolf Virchow University Clinic, the topic of which was “burns in childhood”. The 2nd International Symposium in 1990 with the topic "Functional surgery of esophageal atresia" was carried out in cooperation with the Mainz University Clinic (S. Hofmann v. Kap-Herr). The lectures at this symposium were given to Fritz Rehbein in book form on his 80th birthday. Haße published numerous scientific papers and textbook contributions at home and abroad. After working in pediatric surgery from 1960 to 1991, he retired. The organizational and technical skills were then transferred to the Charité .

Haße is a member of the Swiss Society for Pediatric Surgery and the British Association of Pediatric Surgery, and since 1993 an honorary member of the Estonian Society for Pediatric Surgery. From 1974 to 1999 he was a member of the advisory board of the Kaiserin Friedrich Foundation for advanced medical training, 1983 President of the Congress of the German Society for Pediatric Surgery , 1985/1986 Chairman of the Berlin Surgical Society and from 1992 to 1998 Vice Chairman of the German-Baltic Medical Society.

In 1997 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon. In 2007 he was made an honorary member of the University of Tartu in Estonia. The Estonian Red Cross Order III. In 2008, Estonia's President Toomas Hendrik Ilves awarded him class . In 2014 he was made an honorary member of the Domus Dorpatensis Foundation (Estonia).
