The University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (until December 31, 2008: Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz Hospital ) is the only university hospital in Rhineland-Palatinate and also follows the tradition of the Mainz City Hospital (built in 1914 and converted into the University Hospital in 1952 ).

Overview

More than 60 clinics, institutes and departments as well as two central medical care facilities - the pharmacy and the transfusion center - belong to the Mainz University Hospital. With around 7,980 employees, the clinic is one of the largest employers in the region. On January 1, 2009, the University Hospital and the Medical Faculty of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz were merged into the new University Medicine as a public corporation. The clinic has over 1,500 beds. The number of outpatient cases in 2017 was 279,054, the number of inpatient cases was 68,903 (full and partial inpatient). Almost 3,400 students of human medicine and dentistry are trained in Mainz. At eight educational establishments and schools, more than 600 trainees learn a wide variety of medical health professions: from nurses to speech therapists to dieticians and midwives . In addition, the clinic also provides training in commercial and technical professions.

On January 9, 2014, the supervisory board of the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz appointed Babette Simon , starting April 1, 2014, for a five-year term of the Medical Board and the full-time chair of the University Medical Center.

On January 1, 2019, Christian Elsner took over the position of Commercial Director from Hans-Jürgen Hackenberg.

Teaching

The University Medicine represents the only training facility in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate for the courses in human and dental medicine. At the Mainz University Medical Center there are around 190 places available in human medicine and around 50 in dentistry per semester.
