Wolfgang Meyer (born March 27, 1577 in Basel ; † September 5, 1653 ibid) was a theologian of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Switzerland .

Life

Meyer began studying philosophy at the University of Basel in 1593 and then from 1596 theology , where he was a student of Amandus Polanus von Polansdorf . From 1597 to 1601 he was at the University of Cambridge ( Trinity College ). Around 1602 he entered the service of the Basel Church, first as his father's vicar and from 1605 as his successor at the St. Alban's Church . Soon after his doctorate (1611) he became an associate professor for dogmatics at the University of Basel. In 1630 he became archdeacon at Basel Minster .

Meyer participated in the Dordrecht Synod in 1618/1619 as a member of the federal delegation . In 1621 he took part in church reforms in Mulhouse . The German edition of the Cosmographia published by Sebastian Münster in 1544, published in 1628 , is said to have been edited and expanded by Meyer.

Origin and family

Meyer came from the old Basel family of Meyer zum Hirzen.

He was born the son of the Basel pastor of St. Alban, Jakob Meyer, and Agnes Capito. Agnes was a daughter of Wolfgang Capito and Wibrandis Rosenblatt and Meyer was the grandson of the Strasbourg reformer. His paternal great-grandfather, Jakob Meyer zum Hirzen (1473–1541), supported the Basel reformer Johannes Oekolampad .

Meyer married Maria Brand in 1606 and Valeria Rüdin in 1612.
