career

At a young age, the Niederrhein selection player was active at the association league club Eintracht Duisburg , later at 1. FC Bocholt and VfR Neuss . In particular the offensive performances that Schlief had shown at VfR Neuss in the Niederrhein Association League - 1973/74: 1st place; 1974/75: 3rd place - made the Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen aware of him. Schlief was signed for the 1975/76 season alongside Georg Müllner (VfB Stuttgart Amateure) and Ibrahim Sunday (FC Komasi / Ghana) as newcomers for the green-whites from the Weser. In early July 1975, Schlief was a member of the amateur national team, which played an international match against Singapore on July 8, while on a trip to Asia. The ex-Neusser ran in the 4-1 success as a center forward at the side of teammates like Egon Schmitt , Norbert Eder and Ulrich Stielike and scored a goal. Werder started on August 9, 1975 under coach Herbert Burdenski with an away game at VfL Bochum. In Bremen's 3-0 success, he formed the attack together with Sanny Åslund and Werner Görts . At the end of February 1976 Otto Rehhagel replaced the previous trainer Burdenski and at the end of the round Werder finished in 13th place. Schlef had played 19 Bundesliga games and scored one goal. He also ran for the DFB amateurs on November 12, 1975 (Luxembourg A; 1: 0) and on April 7, 1976 (Denmark June; 1: 0) in two further international appearances. For the 1976/77 season, the mechanical engineer Eintracht Trier joined the 2nd Bundesliga South.

Schlief made his debut on September 11, 1976 at Eintracht Trier under coach Hans-Wilhelm Loßmann in a 2-0 home win against KSV Baunatal in the 2nd Bundesliga. In the 11th minute he brought Trier 1-0 up. His former team-mate Müllner from Bremen had now also moved to Trier.

Hans-Dieter Roos took over from Loßmann in January 1977 and Trier managed to stay in the league with 17th place due to Röchling Völklingen's license waiver. At the side of teammates like Helmut Bergfelder , Rolf Bauerkämper , Werner Vollack (goalkeeper), Reiner Brinsa , Heinz Histing and his former Werder colleague Müllner, Schlief had played 31 second division games for Trier and scored ten goals. In the next three rounds, Schlief played in 95 other second division games for Trier and scored six goals.

He played his fourth and last game in the German amateur national team on September 21, 1976 in Naestved against Denmark U21. With Walter Krause and Winfried Stradt he formed the attack.
