Ulrich "Uli" Stielike (born November 15, 1954 in Ketsch ) is a former German soccer player . As a player, he was UEFA Cup winner, European champion and runner-up world champion and coached the national teams of Switzerland and South Korea, as well as assistant coach of Germany.
Career
Player career
Stielike started playing football in 1962 when he was seven years old at Spvgg 06 Ketsch . At the age of 17 he was appointed to the DFB national youth team.
Borussia Monchengladbach
In February 1973 Stielike moved to Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach , who was coached by Hennes Weisweiler . On June 9, 1973, the defender celebrated his Bundesliga debut in the last game of the season against VfB Stuttgart; shortly before that, the DFB national youth team had been eliminated from the UEFA youth tournament on June 4, 1973 .
Until 1977 he played for Borussia Mönchengladbach in 109 matches as a defender in the Bundesliga . With Mönchengladbach he was German champion in 1975, 1976 and 1977 , DFB Cup winner in 1973 and UEFA Cup winner in 1975 .
real Madrid
In the summer of 1977 Stielike signed with Real Madrid , where he played in midfield; he stayed there until 1985. He is one of nine (as of March 2020) German players who played at Real Madrid. To date, Stielike has scored both the most appearances and the most goals among these players. With Real Madrid he was three times Spanish champion (1978, 1979, 1980) and 1985 UEFA Cup winner .
Xamax Neuchatel
At the end of his playing career, he won two Swiss championships with Neuchâtel Xamax (1987, 1988).
In total, Stielike was used across clubs in 83 European Cup games.
German national team
For the national team , he played 42 international matches from 1975 to 1984 . Stielike was a regular player at both the 1980 and 1984 European Championships and the 1982 World Cup and played through all the games.
He was European champion in 1980 and second in the world championship in 1982. He played his last international game on September 12, 1984 in Düsseldorf in the 1: 3 defeat against Argentina , the first international game for Franz Beckenbauer as head of the national team.
Until the 2010 World Cup, Stielike was the only German national player, apart from Uli Hoeneß (1974, 1976), who had missed a penalty in a soccer world or European championship ( penalty shoot-out against France in the 1982 World Cup semifinals ).
Coaching career
After his active career as a player, Stielike coached the Swiss national team and then Neuchâtel Xamax . When SV Waldhof Mannheim he joined then to his first coach job in Germany. Here he was given leave of absence in September 1995. Since the SV Waldhof forgot to terminate their contract in 1996, this led to an extension of his contract until June 1997. However, Stielike waived his annual salary of DM 454,000 on the condition that a charity game for children with cancer by the Mannheimer was aligned.
Of 9 September 1998 until his release on May 7, 2000 Stielike assistant was national coach Erich Ribbeck in the German national team.
From 2000 on, Stielike worked in the youth division of the German Football Association. Among other things, he was responsible for looking after the perspective team from 2001 to 2003. He was then responsible for the U-20 national team until 2006 and, until 2004, also for the U-21 national team. However, his employment relationship, which expired in August 2006, was no longer extended by the responsible DFB sports director Matthias Sammer . He was succeeded by Erich Rutemöller .
From September 2006 Stielike worked as national coach for Ivory Coast , the current runner-up for Africa . Due to a serious illness of his son Michael, Stielike was suspended as a coach of the Ivorian team from January 10, 2008, ten days before the start of the 2008 African Cup . His son died of pulmonary fibrosis on February 1, 2008 . The Ivory Coast finished fourth in the tournament without the supervision of Stielike. At the beginning of March 2008, Stielike took up the post as national coach for the Ivory Coast again. However, his expiring contract was not extended.
