Wolfgang Schnecke (born July 17, 1944 in Chemnitz , Saxony ; † June 24, 2018 in Chemnitz) was a German set designer, director and media designer.

Life

After graduating from high school and briefly working as a stage worker and lighting technician at the opera house in Chemnitz (Karl-Marx-Stadt), he began his artistic career at the municipal puppet theater, where he worked as a puppeteer, puppet designer and set designer. In 1967 he worked as a set designer, prop master and graphic artist at the satirical cabaret Leipziger Pfeffermühle . In 1970 Wolfgang Schnecke began working as a camera assistant for television in the GDR. Shortly afterwards, he switched to the production design department and in the following years, in addition to large entertainment programs, he was responsible for series such as “Schätz Sie mal” and “ Mit Lutz und Liebe ”. He was one of the first artists who consistently used the then new method of electronic image mixing ( blue screen ) in their design. In this context, the first (later so-called) video clips in the GDR were made during a studio production with Monika Hauff and Klaus-Dieter Henkler . Knowing the possibilities of this technique, he was also able to apply the process to productions in the classical genre. Examples of this are the productions “Dresdner Opernpartituren”, where the blue screen technology was used in this form for the first time outdoors, and the television adaptation of the opera “White Nights” directed by Harry Kupfer . This staging was also part of his diploma thesis as a set designer at the Dresden University of Fine Arts .

In 1981 Gerhard Behrendt hired him as a director for the animation studio of GDR television ("Sandmann Studio"). Here he designed opening and closing credits for the evening greeting, puppet cartoons and flat-figure films and directed the series " Plumps " , among other things . A special highlight of his work was a ten-part puppet cartoon series based on the fairy tale " Thumbelina " by HC Andersen , which is also available in a 45-minute version.

Parallel to his work in the animated film studio of GDR television, Wolfgang Schnecke has been working on artistic computer graphics and animation since 1985, which he programmed himself on a Commodore VC-20 . He was one of the first artists in the GDR to create artistic computer graphics . The results were presented at festivals (Osnabrück Media Art Festival, Leipzig Documentary and Short Film Week, Berlinale ) and art exhibitions (Bild und Szene Berlin, GDR Art Exhibition 1982/83 and 1987/88).

After working for GDR television, in 1987 he moved to the video studio of a large machine tool combine, where he worked as a director for video graphics. With the monetary union in 1990 he began a freelance work as a media designer. He looked after a large number of companies and also designed the first corporate design for the Chemnitz Clinic and the Saxony Chamber of Engineers. He published aphorisms under the pseudonym "Gastropodus", which he illustrated with his own computer graphics, and took over the complete journalistic and photographic design of a book for the anniversary of a Chemnitz housing association. Wolfgang Schnecke lived and worked in Chemnitz, where he died after a serious illness in June 2018 at the age of 73.
