Wolfgang Pool

Wolfgang pools (* 1. September 1903 in Bielefeld ; † 12. January 1978 in Herdecke ) was a German Bauhaus - designer , goldsmith and professor at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg .

Life

After an apprenticeship in goldsmithing in the Bielefeld workshop of goldsmith August Schlüter and attending the crafts and arts school in Bielefeld , Tümpel began studying at the Bauhaus in Weimar in autumn 1922 . He studied with Johannes Itten , Paul Klee and Naum Slutzky , among others , and worked in Oskar Schlemmer's stage workshop . In 1924 he was accepted into the metal workshop at the Bauhaus by László Moholy-Nagy . When the Bauhaus moved to Dessau , he followed his teacher and friend Gerhard Marcks to Halle / Saale and studied at the arts and crafts school of the city of Halle / Burg Giebichenstein . In 1926 Wolfgang Tümpel passed his journeyman's examination as a silversmith there. In 1927 he founded a "workshop for vessels, jewelry, lighting" in Halle. In 1929 he moved to Cologne , in 1933 he returned to Bielefeld. It was not until 1939 that Wolfgang Tümpel passed his master craftsman examination. Between 1951 and 1968 he was head of the metal class at the State Art School Hamburg (from 1952: University of Fine Arts Hamburg). Tümpel set up a workshop in Ahrensburg .

Tümpel had been married to Alice von Scholl since 1934 and had five sons and a daughter, including the art historian Christian Tümpel .

Tümpel designed important creations and received important orders, for example the one to equip the guest house of the federal government on the Petersberg in Bonn with lights. From 1951 he also intensified his work as a product designer . He mainly designed everyday objects such as lamps, cutlery, tea sets, candelabra , altar utensils and jewelry.

From 1929 Wolfgang Tümpel designed metal objects for WMF ( Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik ) and silver goods for Bruckmann & Sons . His most important designs include a cylindrical lamp for Goldschmidt & Schwabe (1927), the desk lamp No. 03086 for the Bünte & Remmler company (1931) and the brass and plastic coffee box, which was produced in the millions for the Tchibo company (1962).

Awards

  • 1935: 2nd prize from the Gesellschaft für Goldschmiedekunst (GfG) for a silver cross with ivory inlays
  • 1936: 2nd prize in a competition for GfG Olympic cups
  • 1937: 1st prize for a bracelet in a competition organized by the GfG
  • 1941: Winner in the competition for the mayor of Bielefeld
