Wolfhart Spangenberg

Wolfhart Spangenberg (born November 6, 1567 in Mansfeld , † after 1636) was a Strasbourg poet of animal fables and school dramas.

Life

Wolfhart Spangenberg was born in Mansfeld as the son of the theologian Cyriacus Spangenberg , but had to flee his home country with his father as a child. In 1577 the family found both accommodation and a new livelihood in Strasbourg . Spangenberg was initially raised privately and then matriculated in Tübingen in 1586 ; In 1591 he acquired the theological master's degree . With no prospect of an academic career, he found a job as a proofreader with the famous Strasbourg printer Bernhard Jobin and his son Tobias Jobin . Like the poets Erasmus Finx and Philipp von Zesen , this gave him direct access to printing and publishing. He wrote school dramas and translations for the Strasbourg academic theater . He also joined the Strasbourg Mastersingers Society and took an active part in its events and publications. His most important contributions to German literature include the two animal fables about the goose king and the donkey king .

In 1611, before the war began, he left Strasbourg to take up his first and only job as a pastor in Buchenbach an der Jagst. He was still drawing as such in 1634, but after 1636 his trace was lost.
