Women in Jazz (Halle)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Women in Jazz is a jazz music festival at which exclusively female musicians perform, or where certain jazz projects are presented by them. The festival has been held annually in Halle (Saale) since 2006 .

Conception of the festival

March 20, 2005 is the founding day of the Women in Jazz jazz festival . After a preparation period of eleven months, the first festival started on February 2, 2006 in Halle (Saale). The aim of the festival was and is to provide international and national female artists with a stage to recognize the importance of female musicians for the development of jazz . Since the turn of the millennium at the latest, jazz music has also been increasingly shaped by women. In addition to the dominant position of women in vocal jazz, there is an increasing emancipation in instrumental jazz. Women in Jazz takes account of this development in terms of content by only presenting concerts by female musicians or by musicians who are mainly specific jazz projects.

International female musicians are presented at the festival; it encompasses most styles of jazz . The intention is to depict jazz in its multicultural and musical diversity. To date, artists from Europe, America, Africa and Asia have been guests.

The festival program consists of a main program with several concert evenings as well as a supporting program with exhibitions, jazz club and session events, city jazz and concerts with regional artists. The concerts mainly take place in the Halle Opera House and in the Ulrichskirche concert hall .

The conception of Women in Jazz refers to several American concert series with similar intentions, namely the Women in Jazz Association in Austin, Texas (since 2003), the Women in Jazz South Florida (since 2007), the Women in Jazz Inc. New York City (since 2009) and the Washington Women in Jazz Festival at the Kennedy Center Washington, DC (annually since 2010).
