The Wonnangatta River is a river in Gippsland in the Australian state of Victoria .

It rises below Mount Despair in the Alpine National Park ( Great Dividing Range ) at an altitude of 1220  m . It flows to the southeast and ends after 151 km in the Mitchell River National Park at an altitude of 108  m in the Mitchell River .

Its main tributaries, most of which arise in the Australian Alps , are the Humffray River , Wongungarra River , Dry River, and Moroka River .

The largest city on the river is the small town of Waterford .
