The village of Wootton Bridge is at the easternmost point of Wootton , on the border with Fishbourne . The symbol shown on the sign represents a gray heron .

Wootton , also known as Wootton Bridge , is a parish of about 3,000 people on the Isle of Wight . The community was first mentioned in 1086. The place is between the towns of Ryde and Newport .

The Wootton Common housing estate is to the south at the intersection of the same name. To the west of Wootton Creek is the younger village of Wootton Bridge . The local Parish Council is responsible for the entire village.

Development of the name

Wootton is a derivative of "Woodtown", which means something like forest clearing . However, there are also other derivations. The first known mention of the city as "Odetown" or "Wootten" comes from the year 1086. In the course of the last millennium the name has evolved and changed significantly.

After the bridge over Wootton Creek was built, the name Wootton Bridge was used for the nearest settlement . The name is commonly used for the whole town. For the national postal service is partly Royal Mail blamed the Wootton Bridge to differentiate from other 19 villages called Wootton used in British territory.

In addition, some residents use Wootton Bridge as a "modern name" for this area. However, Wootton is still the official name and is used on signposts, maps and by the Ordnance Survey . It is also the most popular name for the area.

Wootton Creek

The mill pond at Wootton Creek is formed by a lock gate in Wootton Bridge. A flour mill, demolished in 1962, used the tidal water for propulsion, which flowed through a former second lock gate in the bridge. Today there are houses on the site.

The pond is designated as a protected area and is populated by wild birds and bats . The resident gray heron was chosen as the symbol of the village. At the edge of the pond, Firestone Copse is a publicly accessible wooded area owned by the Forestry Commission .
