Wray is a small town in the northeastern part of the US state Colorado and is located about 250 km east of Denver on the Republican River - about 20 km from the state borders of Kansas and Nebraska . The city is the administrative seat of Yuma County . Wray was All American City of 1993.
A long chain of grass-covered sand hills extends north of the city. Rocks, cliffs and canyons surround them to the south. The fertile area around Wray can be used for agriculture by means of water that is pumped up from the Ogallala aquifer and trickled in a circle. The sandy soil north of the city is particularly suitable for growing potatoes. Corn , wheat , alfalfa , sunflowers and millet (sorghum) grow on the fertile fields in the south . The corn cultivation and grazing land favor cattle raising , making the Wray area one of the main meat-producing areas in Colorado.
16 miles southeast of Wray is the Beecher Island Battleground Memorial . Here, from September 17th to 26th, 1868, on a small island in the Arickaree Fork of the Republican River, a battle between Indians and a troop of the US cavalry took place. This location was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 29, 1976 .
